Panagitsa, Aphidnai

Area: Aphidnai
Type:
Date: 12th century

Description:

The church is situated approximately two kilometers west of the railway station in Aphidnai. In its present state it is a timber-roofed basilica. However, the eastern part of the church and mainly the three-sided conch of the sanctuary belong to the first phase of the monument that can be dated to the middle Byzantine years, possibly the 12th century. This older part has been built with cloisonne masonry. The remaining parts of the church are unskillful and belong to a posterior period (Turkish domination).
