DEFINITION

Cross-in-square churches of a transitional type: This type originated from a combination of the free cross plan and the three-aisled, barrel-vaulted basilica. It is mainly found in Southern Greece and the islands, where it possibly appeared during the 8th century. It flourishes during the 9th and 10th century, whereas it possibly disappears in the end of the 11th century. It is the pioneer type of the cross-in-square church.
