DEFINITION

Hagios Ioannis of Magoutis: One of the oldest churches in Athens, Hagios Ioannis of Magoutis was a small, three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica, which was demolished in 1850. It was situated in the northern slope of the Acropolis, today’s Erechtheos Street in Plaka close to the post Byzantine church of Hagioi Anargyroi of Kolokinthi (Metochion of the Holy Sepulcre). It was built in 871 A.D. The owner’s inscription, which is granted by the Byzantine Museum, has been preserved.
