Angel 's heads (?), Kalamos

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens
Date: 1st half of the 13th century

Description:

This wall painting part consists of five agglutinated fragments. A head is depicted frontally. It is probably an angel with a red halo defined by a wide, white line. The beardless figure has youthful features and brown, curly hair. On the left another figure with similar characteristics is visible, turned in three quarters. The faces have big eyes with arched eyebrows, symmetrical characteristics and vigorous flesh. They are the work of local artists in Attica during the first half of the 13th century.

The church of Hagios Nikolaos lies in the Cemetery of Kalamos outside of the village. It is a cross-vaulted church, which is built on an older temple, dated to the 13th century. It is rubble masonry without brick-work or dentil courses. From the wall paintings decorating the interior only fragments from the roof have been preserved, mainly saints’ and angels’ faces.
