Holy woman 's head, Kalamos

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: 1st half of the 13th century

Description:

This part consists of three agglutinated fragments. On the blue ground is depicted the figure of a holy woman till the chest turned to the side. She wears a purple maphorion wrapped tightly around her body, with schematic folds in white parallel lines. The youthful face is portrayed with care and plasticity. Rosy spots brighten the cheeks on her brown skin, the mouth is small and rosy and the eyes big and expressive. She bears the same halo as the other holy woman in the same church. The figure with the well-designed features is one of the most artistic ones preserved in the church of Hagios Nikolaos.

The church of Hagios Nikolaos lies in the Cemetery of Kalamos outside of the village. It is a cross-vaulted church, which is built on an older temple, dated to the 13th century. It is rubble masonry without brick-work or dentil courses. From the wall paintings decorating the interior only fragments from the roof have been preserved, mainly saints’ and angels’ faces.
