Fragment with black bands (Beginning of the 6th century), Well in Herodou Attikou Str., 1,06 x 1,51m.

Black bands

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: Beginning of the 6th century

Description:
The wall painting comes from room 6 of an extensive building complex, probably of a public character. The latter was located during the construction work in the Athenian metropolitan railway. The mansion, which covered an area of 510 square meters, was founded in the 2nd century A.D. on an older cemetery, and has at least two building phases. It consisted of 15 rooms, 4 of which were decorated with mosaics and wall paintings that can be dated to the final phase, the one of the 6th century. Vertical black bands, which probably created rectangular frames, are pictured on an off-white ground.
