Abacus Pattern, Well in Herodou Attikou Str.

Description:
The wall painting is preserved in very good condition. Abacus pattern are depicted fragmentarily in rectangular frames bordered by rectangular vertical parts, which imitate marble plaques. The inner part of the a.p. also imitates marble revetment. The wall painting comes from the lower part of the monumental decoration of an important public building. The latter was discovered in the town center during the recent construction work in the Athenian metropolitan railway. The wall painting derives from the same room as two more fragments with similar decoration (Abacus pattern fragment, Three abacus patterns). The extensive building complex, which covered an area of 510 square meters, was founded in the 2nd century A.D. on an older cemetery. It consisted of 15 rooms, 4 of which were decorated with mosaics and wall paintings.
