Abacus pattern fragment, Herodou Attikou Str.

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: Beginning of the 6th century

Description:
The fragment is preserved in pretty good condition. A fragment of an abacus pattern is depicted on a rectangular frame, whose inner part looks like a marble revetment. The wall painting comes from the lower part of the monumental decoration of an imposing public building. The latter was located and excavated in the town center during the recent construction work in the Athenian metropolitan railway. The wall painting is a continuation of a bigger fragment with similar decoration (Three abacus patterns), with which it formed a corner. The building covered a space of 510 square meters and was founded on an older cemetery in the 2nd century A.D. It consisted of 15 rooms decorated with mosaics and wall paintings.
