Capital, Megali PanagiaArea: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: 12th century
Description:
Marble capital. Its sides are covered by dense floral designs of winding tendrils with half-leaves, which form thorny palmettes and heart-shaped ornaments. The careful usage of a drill at the point where the half-leaves bend accentuates the artistic relief decoration. It is found in the destroyed church of Megali Panagia in Athens and it is dated to the twelfth century A.D
