Fragment of a panel, Thisseion Collection

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: 13th-14th century

Description:
Fragment of a marble panel with flat-relief decoration. Two eagles and floriated branches with cloven endings are depicted on the lower part of a rampant cross, which is based on a stepped base. The careful synthesis – clearly dependant on eastern models – is characterized by designing mastery. It comes from Athens and it was formerly part of the Thisseion Collection. It is dated to the thirteenth – fourteenth century A.D.
