Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens
Date: 11th-12th century

Description:
Marble panel. A banded frame decorated with cufic patterns and a winding tendril with half-leaves encircles the central representation. The latter is ornated with two standing lions on both sides of the tree of life, and with rosettes on the upper corners. A rich and elaborate décor on a low-relief differentiates the panel. It comes from Athens and it was formerly part of the Thission Collection. It is an exquisite specimen of the ornamental sculpture of the eleventh – twelfth century A.D.
