Description:
Marble monolithic sarcophagus with relief decoration on the one long side. A banded floriated cross with rosettes and drops where the cross arms intersect is encircled by two isosceles crosses and palmettes on medals. The symmetrical synthesis is typical of the middle-byzantine sculpture. It comes from Athens, the area of Hadrian’s Library. It is dated to the eleventh century.
