Lintel, Petrakis Monastery

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: End of the 10th-Beginnings of the 11th century

Description:
Marble lintel with relief decoration. The central floriated swastika is encircled by leafy rosettes, vertical interlacing designs and two sphinxes holding the tree of life. Diversity, density of decoration and its perfect technical execution distinguish the lintel. It comes from Petrakis Monastery in Athens. Taking into consideration the careful attribution both of the rosettes and the floriated cross the sculpture can be dated between the late tenth and the early eleventh century.
