Plaque, Akropolis area

Area: Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Date: 11th century

Description:
Marble inscribed plaque with an engraved inscription of characters of unequal size. The words have been misspelled and some are abbreviated. The inscription is closely related to an engraving on a column of Parthenon. The bishop of Athens, Leo, is mentioned there as Syngelos and Rector, titles he held till 1069, year of his death. It is about Bishop Leo II, the only one who held both of the afore mentioned titles. It was found by George Sotiriou in one of the graves discovered during the excavation of the Byzantine church of St Dionysius Areopagites, NE of the Areius Pagus in Athens. It is believed that the plaque was walled in a tower of Akropolis or in its external wall, and that it was later transferred, for unknown reasons, to the position it was found. It is dated to the eleventh century A.D.
