Basilica, Eleusis

Area: Eleusis
Type: Basilica
Date: Early-Christian

Description:
The ruins of this basilica lie in the northeast of the yard of the sanctuary in Eleusis, where nowadays is the post Byzantine small church of Hagios Zaharias. It is a five-aisled, 5th century basilica. In the north of the narthex was annexed a baptistery reminiscent of those in Asia Minor, namely a square run by a corridor with a built cross-shaped font covered with marble plaques in its center. In the east, in the yard of the baptistery are annexed a smaller changing room and a photisterion. Inside the photisterion there is in situ a marble throne supported by lion feet.
