Frangokklissia (Frankish Church), Penteli

Area: Vagiati, Penteli
Type: Cross-in-Square
Date:

Description:
The ruins of this important church mentioned by Orlandos lie in Vagiati in Penteli, on the right side of the road leading from Old Penteli Square to New Makri, before we reach Hagios Petros. The church must have been cross-in-square with rough masonry. Orlandos mentions that this purely Byzantine type leads to the conclusion that the church was not built by Franks. However, for the justification of the name Fragkoklessia he supposes that it was delivered to a western monastic community, possibly the Freres Mineurs. The church is dated to the 13th – 14th century.
