Georgios, Hagios, Karelas

Area: Karelas, Paiania
Type: Aisleless Domed
Date: 10th century phase

Description:

Southeast of the village Paiania, in Karelas, only a few meters from Lavriou Avenue lies the church of Hagios Georgios, also called Sklepios (probably from the name Asklepios).

The church in its present state is dated to the post Byzantine years, although it preserves a much older 10th century phase. This is easily discernable from the surrounding area of the church, where one can spot the existing spolia such as marble plaques, column fragments and in general ample building material. Moreover, the ancient fragments walled into the church masonry indicate that both the monument and the area have a very rich history. The name Sklepios (Asklepios) itself seems to be related to the succession of veneration during the passing from paganism to Christianity.

The church is single naved with a low, cylindrical dome.

The interior wall paintings do not present any considerable interest and cannot be dated before the 19th century.
