Thomas, Hagios, Plaka-Athens

Area: Plaka-Athens
Type: Basilica
Date: phases

Description:

The ruins of Hagios Thomas church are located on Vrysakiou Street in Thisseion. They are apparently identified with the church of Hagios Thomas in Eurysaki, which was demolished in 1834 by the prince Kantakouzinos. The area is connected with the Athenian families of the Palaiologoi-Pachymeroi as well as with the martyr Michael Libon.

This position is marked in the topographical designs of Athens in 1456 – 1687, namely the period of the Turkish domination.

The area presents great interest, since it was an area of continuous veneration from the early Christian years till the late post Byzantine period.

We can detect four phases: the first phase, late antique or early Christian, brought into light a building with fragments of a mosaic floor, the second phase the ruins of a 7th – 8th century basilica, the third phase a middle Byzantine basilica (9th – 10th century till the years of the Turkish domination), while the fourth phase is dated to the 17th century. The connection of these church ruins with aristocratic Athenian families and with Libonas’ sacrifice provides information on this veneration place in the heart of medieval Athens.
