Basilica, Lavrio

Area: Lavrio
Type: Basilica
Date: 5th century

Description:
The ruins of this 5th century basilica lie on Nikoli hill in Hagia Paraskevi, towards the harbor. The choice of this position in correlation with the ancient temples in Sounion proves the antagonism between the two religions, the pagan one and the forthcoming Christian one. This basilica is traced in a 1867 map as Eglise d’ Epaminonde (Church of Epaminondas). The preserved fragments of the exquisite mosaics that decorated the floor of the sanctuary are nowadays displayed in the Lavrion Archeological Museum. The discovery of this early Christian basilica will place the historical problems related to the area under a new perspective.
