Georgios, Hagios, Pournari

Area: Pournari, Oinoe - Megaris
Type: Not fully developed, Cross-in Square Church
Date: 12th century

Description:
The church dated to the 12th century is not fully developed cross-in-square. It is a metochion of the Monastery of Hosios Meletios, namely it is one of the many churches that existed in the area of Pastra – Kithairon, which formed this great monastic community that made the mountain and the area around it a place of asceticism. In his epistles Michael Choniates often mentions the “philosopha frontistiria” (metochia) that constitute the monastic community of Kithairon. The church is located on a low slope, on the right of the old street which leads to Thebes via Eleusis – Mandra, in the position Pournari, close to Oinoe in Megaris, in the south of the Monastery of Hosios Meletios. It is an elegant building with a beautiful, cylindrical dome. During the years of the Turkish domination, the western entrance of the church was closed and another one in the south was opened. Nowadays, the church has entrances on both sides. It is dated to the 12th century.
