Theodoros, Hagios, Aphidnai

Area: Aphidnai
Type: Cross - Vaulted
Date: 13th century

Description:

In Aphidnai lies the small, cross-vaulted church of Hagioi Theodori, which is dated to the late Byzantine period. It is built with rubble masonry. The church must have been full of wall paintings. One can detect two layers of wall paintings, out of which the last one is more recent. Remnants are preserved from the oldest layer (dated around the end of the 13th century). In the whole transverse barrel-vault is preserved a fragment of the wall painting of the Pentecost with six apostles seated with open Gospels, while on the western wall a fragment of the Crucifixion (the Virgin Mary with holy women) is detected. Moreover, military saints (Hagios Georgios, Hagios Theodoros, as well as other unidentified figures) are found in a fragment on the northern and southern wall respectively.
