Basilica, Glyphada

Area: Glyphada
Type: Basilica
Date: 5th century

Description:
The church is an early Christian, three-aisled basilica with a narthex. Nowadays, one can only see its ruins in Glyfada coast, near Posidonos avenue and next to a restaurant. It was revealed in 1929. According to Professor Orlandos, the basilica must have been destroyed in the 6th – 7th century and reconstructed during the middle Byzantine period, more restricted in size and single-aisled. Orlandos mentions a similar case in Attica, the basilica in Kalyvia. During the years of the Turkish domination, in its third phase, a small, single-aisled church was built, which extended from the apse till the screen of the old basilica.
