Demetrios, Hagios, Saronikos

Area: Koropi Beach
Type: Triconch Domed
Date: Middle of the 11th century

Description:

The church is situated only a few meters away from Posidonos avenue, close to Lagonisi (Blue Coast). It is a triconch church, whose initial phase dates to the middle of the 11th century. The external, semi-exagonal conch as well as a big part of the apse of the sanctuary belong to this phase. The rest of the building along with the dome belong to the second phase of the church that is dated to the years of the Turkish domination. In the northern conch there is the wall painting of the Palm Sunday, a unique specimen of the initial painting of the church. The style of the wall painting connects the monument with the wall paintings of Hagios Petros in Kalyvia, Pentelis Cave and Panagia Merenda in Markopoulo. It is a balanced synthesis, which could be dated after the middle of the 13th century.
