Frankish Tower, Aspropyrgos

Area: Asprospyrgos
Type:
Date: Frankish rule

Description:
On the road from Aspropyrgos to Eleusis lie the foundation remnants of a tower dated to the period of the Frankish rule. These remnants consist of big blocks out of white marble incorporated into the tower, which derived from ancient funerary monuments. Due to the white marble, the city was named after the tower, Aspropyrgos. The area is full of ancient monuments and remnants such as: the Roman Adrianos bridge before we enter Eleusis on the Eleusinian Kephissos (today’s Sarantapotamo), the archeological site of Riton (today’s Koumoundourou lake), the archeological site of Eleusis at the end of Iera Odos as well as the post Byzantine church of Hagios Zaharias built with ample ancient material in the position of a 5th – 6th century early Christian basilica, on the neighboring Square of the Heroes.
