Column of Neophytos, Stavros

Area: Stavros, Hagia Paraskevi
Type:
Date: 1238

Description:
Inscribed roadsign erected in 1238 placed in the north of the road leading to Mesogeia (today’s Mesogeion Avenue), in order to signal the connection between Athens and Mesogeion valley. It is the so-called Neophytos kionion (column) named after the monk who constructed the road. In all probability he must have lived as a monk in the neighboring Monastery of Hagios Ioannis Kynigos of the Philosophers in Hymettus. Following the initiative of the Ministry of Culture the column was transferred to the courtyard of the church of Hagia Thekla, where it is nowadays displayed along other architectural fragments.
