Ruin (?), Markopoulon

Area: Dagla, Markopoulon
Type:
Date: ?

Description:

An unidentified ruin is found on Dagla hill, east of the tower dated to the Frankish rule. It is probably contemporary with the rest of the monuments and building remnants on the hill. The area is called Dagla, where the ancient demos Agnountos used to be (Agni = osier), probably due to the osiers flourishing in the area. This area has captured archaeologists’ interest since the last century, as ancient sculptures were traced enwalled into the neighboring Byzantine church of Taksiarchis. Among the monuments on the hill also lie the ruins of a church known as Hagios Konstantinos in the north of Taksiarchis. On the hill edge is preserved a tower dated to the period of the Frankish rule, in the east of which lie the ruins of an unknown church. On the southern slopes of the hill close to the Frankish tower are found the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Hagios Aimilianos with the four established building phases.
