Nikolaos, Hagios, Oropos

Area: Palaios Oropos
Type: Not fully developed, Cross-in Square Church
Date: 13th century

Description:

The church lies in ruins in the east of the village Old Oropos. It is a cross-vaulted church. Orlandos believed it to be post Byzantine and dated it to the years of the Turkish domination. However, based on the sanctuary apse a later study (I. Koumanoudis) regarded it a Byzantine monument, one of the oldest in the area, like the deserted church of Hagios Georgios (13th century). Wall painting fragments indicate not only financial prosperity during its construction period but also the religious faith of the dwellers in Oropos.
