Anargyroi, Hagioi, Koropi

Area: Koropi
Type: Timber - Roofed, Three - Aisled Basilica
Date: Byzantine phase

Description:

The church of Hagioi Anargyroi is located outside Koropi on the old street connecting the village with Vraona (Skouperi). Due to severe alterations and cement annexes, nowadays it has entirely lost its Byzantine character. In its present state the church is a timber-roofed, three-aisled basilica.

In the interior, it has many traits of the period of the Turkish domination such as the low built screen, small doors etc. However, those characteristics that confirm its actual date still exist. The three-parted, barrel-vaulted sanctuary, the high proportions and the three-sided conches can date the church to the Byzantine years. Especially, the two eastern columns in front are probably in their initial positions. Two recesses in the southern and northern wall clearly reveal the initial architectural type. It was a simple, two-columned, cross-in-square church.

The wall paintings are more recent and not very artistic. Only a few of them can be dated to the 18th century.
