Ruined church, Kaisariani

Area: Kaisariani
Type:
Date: 10th century

Description:
It is a middle Byzantine church (10th century), of a transitional type built in the position “Cemetery of the Holy Fathers”, on a hill southwest of the Katholikon of Kaisariani Monastery. Only a few remnants are preserved on those of the early Christian basilica. It is the first early Christian center founded in this position, which offers a view till Saronikos, a fact that justifies Michael Choniates’ references. In the southwest of this middle Byzantine church was built in the period of the Frankish rule the catholic church of Hagios Markos, known as Fragomonastero. Church parts are preserved in very good condition. The church of the Taksiarchai in the west is much more recent dated to the post Byzantine period.
