Church of H. Georgios in Erythrai. View from E. (in Pr. Bouras' book)

Georgios, Hagios, Erythrai

Area: Erythrai (Kriekouki)
Type:
Date: 12th century

Description:

The church lies in the east of the village Kriekuki (Erythrai). Orlandos believed that it used to be the “hermitage” mentioned in the Vita of Hosios Meletios, where he had retreated for twenty eight years. However, Bouras claims that the church did not exist in 1057. It is mentioned that during this year Hosios Meletios left his hermitage after twenty eight years. Neither the synonymity nor the lack of another monument in this area justify the identification.

It is a small, not fully developed cross-in-square church dated to the 12th century.

It was extended to the west during the years of the Turkish domination.

It is preserved in bad condition.

We only have Orlandos’ descriptions regarding the marble architectural parts of the church.

Artistic wall paintings dated to 1790 are preserved in the interior.
