Frankish Tower, Dagla

Area: Dagla, Markopoulon
Type:
Date: Frankish rule

Description:

In Markopoulon, in Dagla hill lies a tower dated to the period of the Frankish rule. It is positioned on the eastern side of the hill, in the east of the Byzantine church of Taxiarchis Dagla. Among the monuments on the hill we can trace the ruins of Hagios Konstantinos in the north of Taxiarchis. On the hill side a tower dated to the Frankish rule is preserved, in the east of which lie ruins of an unknown church.

On the southern slopes of the hill and close to the Frankish Tower lie the ruins of the early christian basilica of Hagios Aimilianos with the four established building phases.

The tower was part of the general fortification system, a practice established by the Frankish rulers in order to be able to control significant passes and also to deal with dangers by pirate raids. This network included more fortification towers in Mesogaia and generally in Attica. Nowadays, in Mesogaia, most of these towers have been destroyed. Apart from the Vraona tower, the Dagla tower in Markopoulon is preserved in good condition, while destroyed are the towers in Filiati in Koropi and in Miskopi and Kokkina in Paiania.
