Frankish Tower, Oinoe

Area: Oinoe
Type:
Date:

Description:
A tower dated to the period of the Frankish rule is located in Kontita, 2.5 km northwest of Oinoe in Megaris. It is a building of rectangular ground plan. The masonry is rubble stone, as it is accustomed during that period. The tower is a representative specimen of fortification architecture, one of the few preserved in Attica and unique in the area of Megaris. It is a frontier area, hence we can justify the great need for fortification for the control of the street leading from Attica (Megaris) to Boeotia.
