Frankish Tower, Varnava

Area: Varnava
Type:
Date: Frankish rule

Description:
The tower, which is preserved in good condition, lies outside the village Varnava and it is dated to the period of the Frankish rule. It was part of the general fortification system, a practice established by the Frankish rulers in order to be able to control significant passes but also to deal with dangers by pirate raids. This network included more fortification towers in Mesogaia and generally in Attica (see Medieval towers in Oinoe, Braona, Dagla). Nowadays, most of these towers have been destroyed, like those in Filiati in Koropi, in Miskopi and Kokkina in Paiania or in Aspropyrgos outside Eleusis.
