Description:
Church in Elaion in Megara with very important wall paintings. It is a simple, four-columned, cross-in-square church with an Athenian dome. It is dated to the 12th century. In the west, there was an exonarthex, from which only a few painted fragments are preserved. The unknown painter has painted the themes in successive zones putting emphasis on the chistological circle. In the main church saints are depicted on the lower zone, while on the middle and the upper one saints’ martyria and representations from the Passion of Christ such as the Road to Calvary, Peter’s denial, the Last Supper etc. In the sanctuary, in the apse there is an almost ruined wall painting of the Virgin Mary, while in the dome there is the typical theme of Pantokrator seating on a throne.
