Konstantinos, Hagios, Dagla-Markopoulo

Area: Dagla-Markopoulo
Type:
Date: 13th century

Description:

Ruin probably identified with the church of Hagios Konstantinos on Dagla hill, northeast of the Byzantine church of Taxiarchis, also on the same hill. The area is called Dagla, where the ancient demos Agnous used to be (Agni = osier), probably due to the osiers flourishing in the area. This area has captured archaeologists’ interest since the last century, as ancient sculptures were traced enwalled into the Byzantine church.

Among the monuments on the hill also lie the ruins of a church known as Hagios Konstantinos in the north of Taxiarchis.

On the hill edge is preserved a tower dated to the period of the Frankish rule, in the east of which lie the ruins of an unknown church. On the southern slopes of the hill close to the Frankish tower are found the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Hagios Aimilianos with the four established building phases.
