Georgios, Hagios, Koropi

Area: Koropi
Type: Single - Aisled Basilica
Date: Byzantine phase

Description:

The church lies on a low slope in Koropi, an area full of churches and ruins, on the left of the road towards Markopoulo, as we turn to Hagios Panteleimon Street close to the church of Metamorphosis.

It is a small, barrel-vaulted, single-naved church which bears post Byzantine architectural traits in its present state. However, there are elements that can lead to an anterior dating. The built altar is covered with a marble ancient plaque. The screen is built with openings to the Main Gate and the Prothesis.

Exquisite post Byzantine wall paintings are preserved in the church. Nevertheless, on the southern wall is preserved a small young man’s head of Palaeologan art (13th – 15th century).
