Triada, Hagia, Paiania

Area: Paiania
Type: Single - Aisled Basilica
Date: 12th century

Description:

The small barrel-vaulted, single-naved church of Hagia Triada lies on a small hill in Paiania, between the settlement and Hymettus, approximately one kilometer west of the village. It is dated to the 12th century.

Nowadays, the church is lime-washed and in bad condition. One can detect with difficulty the figure of Pantokrator with a halo – in the same form as Hagios Nikolaos Chalidou - on the pendentive dome. The same face expression, the way of drawing and the general features remind us of Pantokrator in Hagios Nikolaos, with which it must be contemporary. Furthermore, this signifies that there must have been an artistic workshop in the area, and more specifically in this remote byzantine district of Attica.

The existence of the church is not scientifically documented in the medieval historical sources.
