Panagia Marmariotissa, Chalandri-Athens

Area: Chalandri, Athens
Type: Mausoleum Transformed Later
Date: Post-Roman-Early Christian period

Description:
This small church is situated in Chalandri, nowadays in the court in the west of the new church of the Virgin Mary. Its foundation is dated to the late Roman period. Initially it used to be a Roman mausoleum made of luxurious marble. But, afterwards it was converted into a church with the addition of a three-sided apse in its eastern side. The name Marmariotissa possibly originated from the material of its initial construction or from the spolia found in the church environment.
